Program Description:
Immerse yourself globally as you help improve lives for individuals, families and communities in Guatemala. This course will introduce you to the challenges and rewards of providing health care in a low-resource setting. Each day will bring opportunities to interact with individuals, families and community groups, sharing knowledge and experience about health and illness. As you work on the ground with inter-professional health care teams and water and sanitation experts, you'll build skills that are invaluable in an increasingly interconnected global society. This adventure is certain to enrich your life, and give you a fresh perspective on nursing.

Students who join this program will be required to register for the following course:

NURS 451: Global Education- Guatemala (3 credits)

This course is led by Pat Carlson of the Ann Arbor School of Nursing, who has taken volunteer groups to Guatemala twice and served in many similar international programs. Professor Peggy McLaughlin is arranging many of the logistical details and is the best person to contact for questions about this program. 


  • This program is open to all CUAA nursing undergraduate students who had completed NURS 316 & 317
  • Must be in good academic and conduct standing with the institution.
  • Must register for the associated course (no auditing). 
  • Must comply with all deadlines for applications, document submissions, deposits and other payments.
NOTE: Space is limited to TEN students on this program. Simply meeting the program requirements does not guarantee acceptance to the program, especially if there are more than ten applicants. Students will be selected based on seniority, GPA, compliance with payment deadlines, and strength of application. 


  • Program Fees: $3,100*
  • Tuition (3 credits, summer tuition)**
  • Study Abroad Fee: $50
  • iNext Insurance Costs: $40
*This is a rough estimate. Final cost will be determined in early 2018.
