Concordia Family Life students have the opportunity to complete their FAM 490 Field Work II while working with LCMS missionaries in Middelburg, South Africa. The month-long field experience will give students the opportunity to work with children and families who are a part of the local ministry.

Lodging and Accommodations:

Students will have their lodging and local transportation arranged by the local LCMS missionary hosts. Students will stay at a secure local guest house in Middelburg, similar to a bed and breakfast where typically two meals a day are provided. 


Program Coordinator:
Pastor Randy Duncan provides leadership to the program, both coordinating pre-departure logistics, and chaperoning the group in South Africa. For questions about this program, please contact Pastor Duncan

Local Hosts:
LCMS missionaries, Drew and Lindsey Berson, will serve as hosts to our students. They will make arrangements for lodging, local transportation, and assist students as necessary. Drew is the business manager of the local LCMS school and Lindsey is an NP serving as the school nurse and coordinates local HIV education and prevention efforts.


  • This program is for Concordia Family Life students who are at the stage of being ready to complete FAM 490.
  • Must be in good academic and conduct standing with the institution.
  • Must comply with all deadlines for applications, document submissions, deposits and other payments.


All expenses associated with the program will be paid independently by students. Below are expected costs for personal budgeting purposes:
  • Program fee: $3,600*
  • Study Abroad Fee: $50
  • iNext Medical/Travel Insurance: $50
  • Passport: $110 (if you don't already have one)
Total: ~$3,810
