Program Description:

This global education experience in Jinja, Uganda will reveal challenges and solutions to accessing health care services in low resource settings.  Focusing on income generation as a means of sustaining wellness and empowerment, you will have opportunities to spend time with community groups as they produce goods for local markets.  Experiences may include maternal and child health promotion; nutrition demonstrations; communicable disease prevention and control; community gatherings and church activities; and excursions to local markets and sights.  Coursework will include a review of principles of health economics, sustainability, and culturally appropriate approaches to health and wellness.  This adventure is certain to enrich your life, and to give you a fresh perspective on nursing.

Leaders

This course is led by Angie Raasch of the Ann Arbor School of Nursing. Professor Peggy McLaughlin is arranging many of the logistical details and is the best person to contact for questions about this program. 
 

Requirements

  • This program is open to all CUAA nursing undergraduate students who had completed NURS 316 & 317
  • Must be in good academic and conduct standing with the institution.
  • Must register for the associated course (no auditing). 
  • Must comply with all deadlines for applications, document submissions, deposits and other payments.
NOTE: Space is limited to TEN students on this program. Simply meeting the program requirements does not guarantee acceptance to the program, especially if there are more than ten applicants. Students will be selected based on seniority, GPA, compliance with payment deadlines, and strength of application. 

Costs

  • Program Fees: $3,400*
  • Tuition (3 credits, summer tuition)
  • Study Abroad Fee: $50
  • iNext Insurance Costs: $40
*This is a rough estimate. Final cost will be determined in early 2018.
