Program Description:

Concordia PA students have a unique opportunity to learn medical practice and health education in Nepal. This program is a partnership with Patan Hospital in Kathmandu and Dhulikhel Hospital. Students will provide medical care under the supervision of a local physician at the two hospitals, with many potential internal medicine foci. There will also be opportunities to work with leprosy patients. Students will stay in guest houses and have some time for side-travel and cultural exploration. The Nepal PA Rotation program meets the requirement for one (1) Internal Medicine rotation. Students will provide hands-on medical care under the supervision of local doctors, similar to other US-located rotations. There will be academic work to be completed prior to going on the rotation, predeparture sessions and readings geared toward medical preparation for the sort of pathologies expected in Nepal, Nepalese culture and safety instruction.

  • Rotation session 7: February 22- March 18, 2021


Medical Experience:
PA students will work under the supervision of local physicians at the at the Patan Hospital in Kathmandu and the Dhulikhel hospital (one hour from Kathmandu) for two weeks each. The patient population who visits the teaching hospital are generally among the poorer citizens of the region. Students will be working in internal medicine in both hospitals.  There is also a day trip to a rural clinic, and the possibility of working with leprosy patients.

Lodging and Accommodations:
In Dhulikhel, will stay at the guest house used by Dhulikhel hospital, and breakfast will be provided.  In Kathmandu, students will stay at an arranged guest house, walking distance from Patan hospital.


This program is administered by Professor Michael Toppe of Concordia's PA program. He will provide instruction and reading material associated with the pre-rotation work, and assist with logistics. 

On-site medical supervision: 
In Dhulikhel, Dr. Dipesh will head the clinical rotation.  In Kathmandu, Mr. Macha will coordinate the medical experience there.  At both sites, student will participate in the overall hospital service and experience


  • This program is for Concordia PA students who are in the rotation stage of their program. 
  • Must be in good academic and conduct standing with the institution.
  • Must comply with all deadlines for applications, document submissions, deposits and other payments.


All expenses associated with the program will be paid independently by students. Below are expected costs for personal budgeting purposes:
  • Round-trip airfare: ~$1,500
  • Lodging: ~$210
  • Local transportation:~ $100
  • Meals: ~$5 per day
  • Hospital rotation fees: $450
  • Study Abroad Fee: $50
  • iNext Medical/Travel Insurance: $50
  • Passport: $110
Total: ~$2,600
